Northern Irish alternative rockers, ASH, was first formed in 1989, when childhood mates Tim Wheeler and Mark Hamilton got guitars for Christmas and established the metal act called Vietnam. Nothing more than something for kicks, Vietnam switched to ASH in 1992 as Wheeler (guitar/vocals), Hamilton (bass), and Rick “Rock” McMurray (drums) aimed to be something more serious. They shared a love for the raw British punk and crafted their musical talents to take the Brit-pop scene by storm at the start of the decade. NME was swooning over these “teen punkers from Belfast,” and by 1994 ASH had signed to Infectious Records to issue the Trailer EP later that fall.

Their glossy youth was undoubtedly alluring, yet their Irish roots exuded a bit of an American flair similar to the likes of Pavement and the Lemonheads. They weren’t even out of high school before three singles hit the Top Five in the UK indie charts. A year later marked ASH’s full-length debut with 1977 and a deal with Reprise Records in the US. Named in honor of the year Star Wars was released, 1977 displayed Wheeler and Hamilton’s full-fledged love for all things extraterrestrial and science fiction-related.
Sharp guitar hooks and exact production work by Owen Morris (Oasis, New Order, Paul Weller) gained the band members the fame they’d been wishing for since childhood. They were headlining major festivals — T in the Park, Glastonbury, Roskilde, and Reading — and playing countless club dates across the globe. In fall 1997, female guitarist Charlotte Hatherley was added to the all-male lineup, a definite change for the band’s sound and image and a step that led ASH’s fan base to expand into more of what the band had been looking for since the beginning.
With a new bandmate and the end of their teenage years, ASH welcomed anything that came their way. The late ’90s marked a maturation for ASH as a unit as well as individually. Their sound featured heavier guitars while Wheeler’s lyrical content experienced a much grittier shift. Their sophomore effort, Nu-Clear Sounds (1998), had Garbage’s Butch Vig (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana) at the mixing board, and it wasn’t necessarily their finest moment. Harsh words and reviews didn’t distract ASH, however.
Free All Angels followed in April 2001, although it didn’t even see a US release until the following summer. Meltdown, the band’s first stateside release for Record Collection, arrived in spring 2005. A year later, and after nine years with ASH, Charlotte Hatherley announced her departure from the band. In 2007 the group released Twilight of the Innocents; the album they claimed would be their last. Interestingly, however, they also assured their fans that they were not breaking up; instead, they would only release singles in response to consumer trends.
Singer Gwen Stefani and her husband, Gavin Rossdale, welcomed their second son on Thursday (August 21), according to a statement from Stefani’s label, Interscope Records. The child, Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale, was born at 12.46pm and weighed eight and a half pounds.

“Mother, baby and family are all happy and healthy,” the statement read.
Zuma is the couple’s second son, joining Kingston, who turned 2 on May 26.
The birth of her second child crests an already busy year for Stefani, who earlier this summer told fans that she was getting back together with No Doubt to record their first studio album in seven years.
At the time of the announcement, Stefani said she was working throughout her pregnancy.
“Feels crazy to be pregnant all over again!!!!!” she wrote on the message boards of her band’s Web site. “We have been spending every day up in the little studio in our house, trying to write music. My favorite part so far is just seeing the guys every day and hanging out. We have so much fun together. The songwriting part is a bit slow on my part. … I think it has something to do with the baby in my belly, but I’m sure it is all of the process, and I really believe this could be the most inspired No Doubt record so far. Can’t wait to see what happens.”
It is unknown whether the birth of her second child will delay the album, which had been pegged for an early 2009 release.
It’s also unclear how the 38-year-old Stefani and 40-year-old Rossdale settled on the name Zuma, although it’s worth nothing that there’s a Malibu, California, beach called Zuma not far from the couple’s Los Angeles home. Neil Diamond named one of his albums Zuma in honor of the same beach. Zuma is also a popular surname in South Africa. Also, the baby shares one of his middle names, Nesta, with Bob Marley.
DMX’s lawyer had until 4pm Tuesday to explain to a Phoenix court why his client missed a date with justice for the second time in a drug-possession case. After that, a warrant would be issued for X’s (real name Earl Simmons) arrest.
Public defender Charles Kozelka told MTV News on Wednesday (August 13) that he did make it to court before the deadline and provided Commissioner Phemonia Miller with documentation that the rapper was unable to appear because he had checked into a Miami hospital on Tuesday morning.

“We provided intake documentation, and the judge said it was insufficient,” Kozelka said. “The judge said he should have informed the court sooner, and because it was the second time he’d missed court in this case, she issued the warrant.”
Kozelka would not say why DMX was hospitalized, nor would he comment on reports that the MC was in a rehabilitation facility. He said that X’s team is “working towards getting him some help, and we hope that will be taken seriously by all parties in this case,” including the court and DMX himself, who is “serious” about getting help with his substance abuse issues. The Yonkers, New York-bred rapper has a home in Arizona, but Kozelka said he also frequently spends time in Miami, where X was arrested twice in June, for driving without a valid driver’s license and attempting to buy cocaine and marijuana from undercover police. The rapper was legally allowed to be out of state, but was required to show up for court.
Another wrinkle in X’s latest legal snafu revolves around the question of why a world-famous rapper who has sold millions of albums would be assigned a public defender for his multiple court cases in Arizona. Public defenders are typically assigned to clients who cannot afford private counsel. A townhouse owned by the rapper reportedly went to a sheriff’s auction in New York on Wednesday, though it’s unclear if that is another sign that he might be having financial problems.
Kozelka would only say that X had “some problems” with the private counsel that was representing him before, so the court appointed a public defender to take over the case. “He qualified for us, and he feels comfortable with me,” Kozelka said.
Kozelka said he’s working on getting his client back to Arizona to take care of the warrant, though he could not guarantee that the issue would be resolved without X being arrested again. “We have to work out an arrangement that will work with the courts,” he said of getting DMX to Arizona and possibly enrolled in a rehab program.
“Obviously, it’s not working now,” he said. “We are in court again next week on other matters, and my hope is we can get the warrant resolved by then and get back on track. We have some things in the works to get the warrant taken care of. My hope is that we can resolve it without an arrest, but he’s been arrested at the airport before, so they obviously have an eye out for him, so I’m not sure.”
In addition to the warrant, Miller raised the rapper’s bond in the case to $25,000 as a penalty for his failure to show.
Miley Cyrus has finally confirmed her long-rumored relationship with fellow Disney star Nick Jonas in an extensive interview in the forthcoming September issue of Seventeen magazine.
While neither had previously confirmed the relationship, it has long been the subject of media speculation – Cyrus said in the interview that “it was really hard to keep it from people.”
“Nick and I loved each other,” Cyrus told the magazine. “We still do, but we were in love with each other. For two years he was basically my 24/7. We were arguing a lot, and it really wasn’t fun.”

Miley admitted that things got dark for her after the two broke up at the end of 2007 – so dark that she even dyed her hair black to reflect how sad she was. “At first I bawled for a month straight,” she said. “I was so sad. I just went into this weird funk. And I dyed my hair black.
“When we were dating, Nick wanted me to get highlights – and so I did that, and I got myself looking great,” she continued. “And then, on the day we broke up, I was like, ‘I want to make my hair black now – I don’t want to look pretty; I want to look hard-core.’ I was rebelling against everything Nick wanted me to be. And then I was like, ‘I’ve got to be by myself for now and just figure out who I really am.’ ”
The brothers were quick to come to Miley’s defense in the wake of her controversial Vanity Fair photos earlier this year.
The 15-year-old superstar said she currently isn’t involved with anyone, and she likes it that way. “Since [the breakup], I’ve realized that I’ve met so many great guys, but I like being the girl nobody can have,” she added. “No one can touch me, no one’s mine. I’m myself. I think it’s sexy to do your own thing.”
Although Nick is rumored to have found love with Wizards of Waverly Place star Selena Gomez, Miley hasn’t given up on the idea that maybe, someday, she and Nick might rekindle their love affair.
“Maybe he’ll be my best friend for the rest of my life,” she speculated, “or maybe I’ll end up marrying Nick Jonas!”
Thirteen of the hottest, most talented boys in Asia under one single band? No way! But it’s true, alright. And they’ve been setting about wrecking havoc in all the young girls’ hearts from day one. Meet Super Junior, one of Korea’s leading boy bands and heartthrobs, every single gorgeous one of them.
Bursting onto the K-pop scene in 2005, the then 12 member band released their first album, Super Junior05 (Twins), which met with a warm reception. Their first single “U,” a catchy R&B ditty quickly took the charts by storm, sweeping many an award, and cementing Super Junior as one of the rising names to look out for.
Kyuhyun was then added to this rambunctious band of brothers in 2006, and 12 became the magical 13. In 2007, the band launched their sophomore effort, Don’t Don. The album did extremely well, and was among the top Korean albums of the year.
Now, MTV Asia brings you a much-envied tete a tet session with the delectable boys. Just six of them, but who’s complaining? Leeteuk, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Sungmin, Donghae and Kyuhyun get set to share what love means to them, how to avoid getting recognized, and some of their weird habits.
